Single Chain fusee skelton timepiece, circa 1840
Ref 2562.
An extremely fine example of a fusee skeleton timepiece, the plaque engraved with the name Samuel Thompson, clock manufacturer, Darlington. Features include six spoked wheels, maintaining power, blued steel helical balance spring and brass ball feet within base. Samuel Thompson is recorded as working in Darlington between 1825 and 1841, and succeeded his father James who was a clockmaker and silversmith.
The timepiece is fitted with original brass ball feet which are located within the rosewood base, most probably due to limitations in the height of the replacement glass dome. Glass domes are very vulnerable to breakage, and replacements can rarely be made to fit the original base.
